The .SE country-specific top-level domain extension was set up in 1986 and delegated to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was really restrictive, so a very low number of domains were purchased. Persons could acquire solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a necessity, i.e. merely Swedish persons, business entities and organizations were able to register a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, accordingly, the number of .SE domains has been increasing each year.
